Father-to-be crushed between a car and van is left in a wheelchair

A mum pregnant with twins witnessed her partner ‘stop breathing’ when he was crushed between a car and a van.

Self employed trader Jamie Elliott, 32, was hit by a car after he got out of his van and has now been left mostly wheelchair bound and unable to work, as his fiancee is about to begin her maternity leave.

Roxy Ward, 34, was in the passenger seat and witnessed the full trauma unfold.

Jamie had just picked her up from work and was outside his van when he was hit by a car. He was then crushed between the car and his van, Roxy said.

She said Jamie was ‘brought back to life’ by CPR as he lay unresponsive on the road in Plymouth, Devon.

She said: ‘I witnessed it all. It was pretty traumatic but all happened so quickly. I was in the passenger seat and couldn’t stop screaming. It was such a fast horrible episode.

‘I got out and was terrified to see if Jamie was ok. He was unconscious on the floor and unresponsive. We were surrounded by a lot of people who tried to help us ring ambulances.

‘Luckily the RNLI have an office close by and they came to give first aid.

‘They did CPR on him as he wasn’t breathing at the scene. Within minutes the ambulance and police turned up and took us to hospital.’

Scans showed no internal damage or brain injury but a lot of bruising and Jamie has currently lost the use of one leg. It was broken in two places and he has had an operation to repair muscle damage.

He’s had two further operations to carry out a skin graft.

Roxy, of Plympton, Devon, added: ‘He was released from hospital after nine days but to get full use of his leg could take up to 12 months – and then he might need a further operation.

‘He can not walk at all. The trauma of that leg has left him pretty much wheelchair bound. I’m pregnant with twins and we also have a six and a 16 year old.

‘It has been a complete whirlwind. He will be out of work for several months and he is self employed so won’t be getting paid.

‘We were putting our house on market to make more room for the babies but we’ve had to stop that.

‘I am due to go on maternity leave soon so financially it has been a massive struggle as well as mentally. Jamie needs the wheelchair to leave the house and it is not easy but we’ve tried to keep the kids sheltered from it as much as possible.’

Jamie and Roxy with their two children. The couple are expecting twins in March next year

A neighbour has now set up a GoFundMe appeal to help support the couple.

Roxy said their twins were due on 31 March next year and they had intitally declined the offer of a fundraising page, which has been set up by a neighbour.

She added: ‘They did offer and we are incredibly grateful but we said no initially and wanted to try and find another way.

‘It is hard enough for everyone else at Christmas and we didn’t want to take charity.

‘But in reality we are incredibly grateful as it really could be months until he is able to work again.’

The GoFundMe Page was set up by Gareth Edmonds and has already reached £3.5K.

Gareth wrote: ‘Jamie is a self employed skilled trader and will not be able to work for quite some time due to his injuries.

‘Jamie and his family are due to grow soon, with his fiancée pregnant with twins.

‘They had also sold their family home to move to a larger property, but had to pull out due to the accident.

‘I’m trying to help them all with Christmas and tide them over for the next few months.
